A Night of Local Talent Shines at Lil’ Brick Theater

What happens when you bring poets, musicians, storytellers, a break dancer, and comedians together under one roof? You get one unforgettable evening of local talent!

Our recent Whatever Open-Mic at the Lil’ Brick Theater in Old Downtown Hanford was a tremendous success—and a wonderful reminder of just how much creative talent exists right here in our community.

The evening opened with poetry, giving local poets a chance to share their words, ideas, humor, and experiences with an enthusiastic audience. From there, the stage filled with the exceptional sounds of a three-piece local band, followed by people who played their guitars with their original songs! The musicians brought tremendous energy and reminded everyone that some pretty amazing music is being made right here in our own community.

Then came the storytellers, sharing stories that made us laugh, smile, and connect with one another. We even had a break dancer take the stage, adding another unexpected and exciting element to an evening that truly had something for everyone.

And, of course, we ended with comedy!

A huge thank-you goes to Megan M., Zack Rodriguez, and Nate Butsch, who did a fantastic job hosting the different sections of the evening and helping keep the energy moving throughout the night.

But perhaps the most exciting part of the evening was seeing so many new faces.

About half of the audience members were attending one of our events for the first time. Even more exciting, about half of the performers were new to our open-mic as well. That is exactly what we hope to see—a place where people feel welcome enough to walk through the door, take a chance, and share what they can do.

One couple told us they had simply been wandering around Old Downtown Hanford looking for something to do when they saw that we were having an open-mic. They decided to come inside—and told us afterward that they enjoyed it immensely.

That story is exactly why we do this.

You don't have to be a professional performer. You don't have to know anyone. You don't even have to have planned to come. You can simply walk in, grab a seat, listen, laugh, enjoy the music, and discover something new—or step onto the stage and share your own talent.

Want to perform? Come join us. Want to watch? Come join us. Want to do both? Even better!

The Whatever Open-Mic takes place on the first Friday of every month at the Lil' Brick Theater, located at: 119 ½ N. Douty StreetOld Downtown Hanford.

The Lil' Brick Theater is home to the Hanford Multicultural Theater Company, where we offer acting, improv, and now stand-up comedy classes, while continuing our mission of creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds to experience and participate in the arts.

Come see what is happening in your own backyard.

You never know what—and who—you might discover at the Lil' Brick Theater.
