I’m Teaching an Intro to Long Form Improv

Writer: Silgo86Silgo86

Starting in September, I will be leading an Introduction to Long Form Improv. Long form improv is akin to a play, encompassing a series of spontaneous scenes and characters, crafted on the spot, without the need for an emcee. It enables the creation of an imaginary world and its narrative before the live audience, delivering a truly real-time and spontaneous experience.

Long form improv perfectly aligns with the artistic essence of acting by resembling a spontaneous play with characters and scenes, devoid of the rigid plot structure of traditional plays.

Here's a concise overview of how it typically unfolds:

  • - A team of improvisers draws inspiration from suggestions provided by the audience, such as objects, words, themes, or places.

  • - This impetus sparks a series of improvised scenes and characters, all spontaneously crafted on the spot, whether overtly or subtly.

  • - These scenes and characters are open to repetition and connection to a specific story, depending on the creative direction chosen by the group.

Long Form improv encompasses a variety of forms, acting as a roadmap for improv groups. The primary goal is to captivate and enthrall the audience by presenting a collection of ideas and characters in a unique and engaging manner.

When executed skillfully, a stellar long form show offers more than just immediate humor; it has the power to provoke thought and astonish with its complexity and originality. Seasoned improvisers often transition to long form after years of short form, finding the latter to be somewhat repetitive and confining.

When executed effectively, long form shows can transport audiences to unique, comedic, and emotionally resonant spaces, ensuring a distinctive experience with each performance.

I am eagerly anticipating the commencement of this Introduction to Long Form Improv course on September 4, 2024, from 7:30 pm to 9 pm.
