Playwright Festival

One of the things we do at HMTC is encourage artistic expression. Today, we are nurturing new playwrights and planning to hold a playwright festival this spring.

This transition feels natural for those taking acting and improv classes. When you join one of our classes, we explain how other parts of theater are accessible. That's why we take pride in our acting and improv classes, which also include puppetry.

In acting, improv, and even puppetry, we tell stories. We share a slice of life in an entertaining way. Or even in a heartfelt way. Stories tell us about life and other experiences. Or even a reflection of our own experience.

From these classes—acting, improv, and puppetry—we see enthusiasm to expand artistic expression.  We encourage our participants to give it a try, and most eagerly jump in.

Many don’t realize that improv classes help develop scenes, which can be used in playwriting. Additionally, acting classes teach you about play structure, as it did for me when I was new to playwriting, it sparked ideas for my own plays. Puppetry is similar; it involves telling stories with wooden figures.

Thanks to the Rotary Club for helping us purchase three of the five puppets we will use in our next puppet show, called the Bitter Couple. More info on that later.

I believe it's all about the storytelling. Be it through a play, a poem, a puppet show, or even in an improv game. It’s all the same to me.
