We’re excited to present our marionette puppet show this weekend — especially because performances like this are rare in our area. It’s not every day you get to experience the quiet magic of true marionette artistry. But what exactly makes these puppets so fascinating?
Marionettes sit at the crossroads of art, illusion, and control. They are not simply toys — they are miniature performers brought to life through visible strings and invisible skill.
Crafted from wood, fabric, paint, and string, a marionette can walk, dance, bow, and even express emotion. Watching something clearly inanimate move with such personality sparks a sense of wonder — that irresistible “How is this alive?” reaction. Even though you can see the strings, the illusion remains powerful. In fact, the visible mechanics often make the performance even more impressive. You see how it works — and it still feels magical.
Each marionette is a small work of art. The carving, painting, costuming, and carefully designed joints all contribute to the character’s movement and expression. In countries such as the Czech Republic, marionette-making is considered part of the national cultural heritage, passed down through generations of skilled artisans.
Our main puppets come from the Czech Republic, a world leader in marionette craftsmanship. Their attention to detail is extraordinary — something you will see for yourself when they step onto our stage.
In addition, our show features three marionettes from Ukraine. While their craftsmanship differs in style from the Czech pieces, they bring their own unique charm and artistry to the performance.
Operating a marionette is both physically and mentally demanding. It requires precision, coordination, timing, and deep focus. However, we’ve developed techniques that make it more accessible for our newly trained puppeteers — allowing them to focus more fully on storytelling and bringing each character to life.
We hope you’ll join us this weekend to experience the artistry, tradition, and wonder of marionette performance firsthand. The show is titled THE BITTER COUPLE.
Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased on our website. Of course you can purchase at the door. Our theater is located at 119 ½ North Douty Street in Old Town Hanford. BOOK NOW BY CLICKING HERE
