The Whatever Open-Mic was a community event request and has been going strong since June. Here, local singers, musicians, artists, poets, storytellers, and even stand-up comics have taken to the microphone to show their talents.
To have something like this in Hanford has gained appreciation as well as recognition in the area. It is now common for people to come from as far north as Sacramento and as far south as Bakersfield to lend the theater five minutes of their artistic expression.
What have we seen so far at the Whatever Open-Mic? There was a drummer who set up her drum kit to impress us with her skills. An artist did a live demonstration of artwork for the audience! A husband-and-wife team performed a musical comedy act. Poets with fresh material come to the mic and share how they were inspired to write a particular poem. Some even wrote it that day! A storyteller from Fresno has come three times to talk about his early navy days with spirited energy. And usually, a slew of stand-up comics from across the valley come for their five minutes each. They tell us they love the vibes of the Lil ’Brick Theater.
Who do we thank for the great idea to have the Whatever Open-mic? The recognition goes to Julio C. Gonzalez, Jr., and Megan M. They saw the potential of the Lil’ Brick Theater and Hanford as a good place to showcase talent.
The event is free for participants and audience members alike. The open-mic is scheduled for the first Friday of every month. To defray expenses, purchasing beverages and tips are much appreciated.
