We celebrated a successful open mic at Lil’ Brick Theater this past Friday. Hosts Julio C. Gonzalez, Jr. (no relation to Silvia) and Megan M. divided the night into three sections: Music, Poetry, and Stand-Up Comedy. In total, there were 7 poets, 11 comics, and 4 musicians.
The poets brought a beautiful texture; Lupe, one of the poets, mentioned that this was her first time performing her poetry at an open mic. All our local poets. A couple of them participate in a local writer’s group.
Eleven comics closed out the evening. Two were new to the stage, making it their first performance in front of an audience. The first newcomer was in his twenties, while the second was in his seventies!
Most of the comics hailed from Fresno. They came because opportunities in Fresno are drying up. One comic who would travel to “Fresno to do his standup comedy noted that he started performing in January, and by March, four venues that welcomed comics had either closed or ceased hosting comedy shows. Locally, one comic was from Hanford, and two were from Lemoore.
Local musicians showcased their music, expressing, “We need something like this here in Hanford.” They were clearly excited to perform. These seasoned musicians offered a wonderful treat for listeners with their music.
We’ll host another event next month on Friday, July 11, encouraging more artists to join the fun. Sign up on our website and subscribe to receive information about the open mic events.
We are located at 119 ½ N. Douty in Old Downtown Hanford. We are deep in the building so don’t be fooled by the front portion of the building.
