The Bitter Couple, a marionette puppet show in Hanford

This week, we rehearsed a marionette puppet show titled “The Bitter Couple.” First of all, thank you to SoCalGas and Hanford’s Rotary Club for their financial support in making this show possible. It allowed us to purchase the puppets and keeps ticket prices low for the community.

The show follows a retired couple, Earl and Maybis, who bicker. Maybe out of boredom, or perhaps that’s just how they are. Their son David suggests therapy. Does therapy broaden their perspective or make things worse? Maybe if the therapist had cookies for Earl and Maybis, they would have made progress in therapy.

This is the fourth time HMTC has used puppets for a performance. The first was Grace Cha’s "Spirits Soaring High." The second was an adaptation of the novel "Don Quixote" for the stage. The third was "The Trial of Bookus," a puppet musical.

We follow the Japanese tradition of Bunraku puppet theater, which is a form of Japanese puppet theater where puppeteers, dressed in black and visible to the audience, manipulate puppets."

The Bitter Couple" is suitable for all audiences. The Bitter Couple" will be shown on March 7, 8, and 15 at 5pm. Tickets are available online at www.hanfordMTC.com, our website, under the ‘events’ category. Tickets will also be available at the Lil’ Brick Theater, located at 119 ½ North Douty in old downtown Hanford.
