I was recently asked if our theater could organize an activity for seniors at a local senior center. When I suggested improv, the answer was a resounding yes! This is fantastic news because I believe seniors would excel at this activity. Why? Improv is about thinking on your feet, and seniors have been doing exactly that their whole lives!
Since 2017, I have been teaching improv to people of all ages in Hanford. I have found that improv is a healthy way to express emotions, helps to improve cognition and memory, and increases social engagement. Improv games also help improve moods, and the laughter provides a zest for life.
Many older adults tend to think they cannot learn after a certain age. However, at HMTC, we aim to prove them wrong. We have a 92-year-old who joined us in 2017 and continues to have fun in our theater classes.
We believe that acting involvement can begin at any age. Theater is a great way to connect with others and work together, and it is also essential for overall well-being. Improv is a good steppingstone for acting, and you can continue the fun with acting classes.
As the Mayo Clinic confirms, laughter is a powerful tool for improving health. It boosts oxygen intake, stimulates the heart and lungs, and triggers the release of endorphins in the brain. By experiencing improv, seniors will be surrounded by people who radiate positive energy and laughter, which all leads to improved health and well-being.
Positive energy is contagious. I can't wait to teach improv to the seniors at this senior center.
