Head for the hills! I JUST WANT TO DO IMPROV (Okay then)

Updated: Aug 11

In his Improv Nerd Blog, Jimmy Carrane highlights the importance of acting classes for improvisers. I wholeheartedly support this perspective because even though improv is performed without a script, it is a form of acting. Disregarding this would be unwise.

Carrane points out that if improvisers aim to work in commercials, TV shows, and films - ventures that offer financial compensation and potential career exposure - they will need to audition, which requires proficiency with a script. Therefore, the ability to act is essential. He emphasizes, "The last time I checked, no one was getting rich off just doing improv."

Carrane argues that acting classes offer an excellent opportunity for improvisers to push their boundaries and reshape their mindset. He clearly states that acting classes enhance improvisers’ improvisational skills and expand their range as actors.

He points out that acting classes require discipline and that actors who dedicate themselves to the craft, even for a brief scene, are wise. Carrane also points out, "Improvisers can be extremely lazy and a little flaky, and taking an acting class can be a rude but necessary awakening if they want more from their career and themselves." I completely agree with Carrane.

Recently, HMTC interacted with some improvisers in the area who we considered more knowledgeable in the craft than most we’ve encountered. The suggestion of taking acting classes made them head for the door. I found this quite amusing because they were engaging with a theater company and wanted to use our actors’ stage!

I will be teaching improv classes this September and October, focusing on long-form improv. Nearly all successful comedic actors have studied long-term improv and learning what they have learned is a good experience. If I am correct at this, there has never been a class on long-form improv in Kings County. If there has been, tell me who taught it. I want to get in touch with the teacher!
