New playwrights

Recently, I received an email from a participant in our acting and improv classes. She attached her first play, which I was delighted to read. I was impressed by her adherence to formatting rules and the engaging nature of her work, which is a testament to the creative endeavors of our participants.

Schools offer various programs that can provide writing opportunities. Generally, schools recommend reading classic and contemporary plays, attending live performances, and studying the elements of drama, such as plot, character, setting, conflict, and theme.

Aspiring playwrights can also enhance their craft through various forms of creative writing. This includes practicing writing stories, sketches, and scenes. It is beneficial to experiment with different genres and styles. Additionally, it is helpful to be an attentive observer of how individuals communicate and behave in various situations.

Structured learning environments provide diverse options for aspiring playwrights. These include enrolling in playwriting courses at colleges, universities, or theater schools. Attending workshops led by established playwrights is also a viable option. Participating in theater groups or drama clubs is another option.

In Kings County, we at HMTC encourage participants and the public to contribute scripts for sharing. We are pleased to provide feedback and have actors read your work on our stage. Hearing your work is an effective way to assist you in making informed decisions about your next steps. We also offer guidance to new writers to local writing groups and even some Zoom playwright classes that we appreciate.

New playwrights should continue to write, experiment, and observe individuals in their surroundings. Feedback is valuable, but ultimately, the writer holds the authority to master their work.
