The Last Hanford Dia de Los Muertos

After eight years of hosting the Hanford Dia de Los Muertos event, factors beyond our control have indicated that this year’s event on November 2nd,  from 10 am to 4 pm, will be our final event.

We began hosting the event in 2017. The Hanford community's support and enthusiasm made the first-ever Dia de Los Muertos event at the Hanford Civic Auditorium a resounding success. The event grew so large that it spilled out into the civic park area the following year.

In 2020, despite the pandemic halting the event, the community's spirit remained undaunted. The following year, the management of The Hanford Mall recognized the community's passion and partnered with HMTC to host the event in their mall area. The food court was decorated, and a storefront room was designated for altars, art, exhibits, and fun things for kids. It was a great space for the community to learn and appreciate the event.

The Dia de Los Muertos event was not only a beacon of pride and joy for our community but also a vibrant celebration of diversity; with folkloric and Aztec dancers, Paty’s dance studio dancers, artists, artisans, musicians, drummers, and puppeteers coming together for a family-friendly event.

Hanford Multicultural Theater's presence and outreach were enhanced. People heard about us and wanted to know more. The mall's customers were happy to be back after the pandemic.

As HMTC mainly operates on grants, this year, it became evident that there was a shortage for this event. In addition, expenses have increased. For example, the mariachi bands, which we find a beautiful addition to the event, have raised their prices by 60%.

We realize that with the shortage of funds, we have to prioritize. Our new location is our priority, and all donations and grants must be used to pay rent and utilities on our Douty Street home, where we hold our acting classes and shows throughout the year.

We are grateful to the Hanford Mall management, our yearly vendors, and participants who always attended our Dia de Los Muertos cultural event. It was an excellent opportunity for our community. We are glad that there are other Dia de Los Muertos events in the area and valley to maintain the cultural tradition.
